“An onion can make people cry but there’s never been a vegetable that can make people laugh.”- Will Rogers
Will Rogers was right about onions. I don’t think anyone here at the farm was laughing while they planted the onions. It involves a lot of bending over which results in some creaking noises, a few moans and groans and no little perspiration.
When the onions are ready for harvesting there is more digging, bending over and there may or may not have been a few groans or moans.
These are harvested onions air-drying on chicken wire at the barn. Check out those awesome colors from the different varieties of onions; yellow, white and red.
This is what the onions look like after the stalks are braided and hung in the store room. All of that home grown bounty makes you feel mighty good. We kept some and we shared some. That, my friends, is how an onion can make you laugh … or at least grin really big.
