Come one, come all…it’s County Fair Time!

Nothing says fall like the annual county fair experienced in a small town. Everyone from babies to old folks goes to the fair. The sights, sounds, and smells of the show barns, exhibits, and midway evoke nostalgia and hearken back to simpler times. In addition to competition for the best in class of various animal breeds are the various classes of entries for home grown vegetables, fruits, nuts, hay, feed crops, quilts, sewing, art, potted plants, flower arrangements, home canned foodstuffs, and my favorites…baked goods and candies. There are separate classes of entries for adults and children. It has been a joy to see my grandchildren win prizes for old family recipes they have learned to cook and for veggies they have helped to plant and grow. Gillespie County Fair is on my calendar for the end of August which means I had better finish my art projects and decide on a cake or pie to enter. I have entered pies many years only to be beaten by a good friend’s 90+ year-old father! Maybe this is my year…after all I am now one of the old folks myself. Anyway I can’t wait to walk the midway, ride the Ferris Wheel, enjoy a candy apple and watch the excitement in the eyes of both the young and those who are young at heart as the sun sets, and the lights come on. It’s fair magic!
