Let’s Celebrate Texas!

March 2 was Texas Independence Day and on that day back in 1836 a courageous band of “soon to be Texans” met at Washington on the Brazos and adopted the Texas Declaration of Independence proclaiming freedom from Mexico. Each signer risked death from the Mexican government who controlled Texas at the time. Sam Houston was authorized to gather an army from the settlers who had come to Texas for a better life. He moved continually eastward gathering more men along the way, with the Mexican army, under General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, close on his heels,. Reeling from massacres of Texan soldiers at the Alamo and Goliad Sam Houston and his small army made a stand at San Jacinto winning the day and the Republic of Texas was born. Celebrate 190 years of Texas!
