Memorial Day had its origins after the Civil War and was first known as Decoration Day. Contrary to popular media, Memorial Day is not all about picnics or special sales discounts given to early bird shoppers. Instead, it is a day set aside to remember and honor all those who lost their lives serving in the armed forces to protect our freedoms. It is a day to recall their names and to honor their ultimate sacrifices for our country. I shall always remember my older sister’s high school boyfriend who was killed in action while serving in Vietnam, PFC Richard A. “Dick “Neal. I have seen his name on the Vietnam Memorial in Washington D.C. I will forever picture the young man that I knew, and saw briefly before he headed back for a second tour of duty from which he never returned. Honor our heroes and remember their names.
