This past weekend we cooked burgers out on the grill. Some people want cheese on theirs and others don't. We had some beans cooked up and stuff on the side if you wanted it. They were GREAT! A story came up about our grandmother who lived to be almost 96. When having a meal like this, she would tell our mom, her daughter, to put hers in that blue plate because it made it taste better. When I was growing up, we took a vacation almost every year to the same little town in Colorado, Lake City. My grandparents discovered this place on a great adventure they took in 1927. My grandmother described that they left the Texas Panhandle and drove to Denver. The road was two ruts and from time to time they would have to stop and let down the fence, drive through and then put the fence back up. It was not the modern freeways of today. My own dad, step-dad, father-in-law. and grandfathers are no longer walking this earth but their contributions to what I am today are many. My paternal grandfather “Papaw” was a true-life cowboy, a quiet man with twinkling blue eyes and a ready smile, from him I learned gentleness and kindness. Memorial Day commemorates the men and women who died while in the military service of their country, particularly those who died in battle or as a result of wounds sustained in battle. In other words, the purpose of Memorial Day is to memorialize the veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. We spend time remembering those who lost their lives and could not come home, reflecting on their service and why we have the luxury and freedom that we enjoy today.
